About the study

Please note that the trial is now closed to recruitment, and will close completely at the end of February 2018.

The purpose of the study

In the TOPPITS trial, we aim to find out whether a drug called a proton pump inhibitor (Lansoprazole) helps to control throat problems, such as feeling like you have a lump in your throat, catarrh (phlegm), sore throat, coughing to clear your throat, or hoarseness, which do not easily get better.  Although this research may not immediately help the people that take part in it, we hope that it will help people with throat problems in the future.

With up to 57,000 NHS patients treated in hospital each year, throat problems are very common in the UK.
