How the study will be carried out

The trial took place at eight UK centres:

  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Sunderland
  • Nottingham
  • Glasgow
  • Manchester
  • Brighton
  • Birmingham
  • Stockport

Participants undertook three study visits, which may well have been part of the usual hospital visits for throat patients, if they routinely attended a hospital ENT clinic. At the first visit participants had the opportunity, possibly at their usual clinic appointment, to discuss the study with the study doctors and research nurses at their local hospital and ask any questions.

The study involved the following:

  • Visit 1 - completing questionnaires about throat symptoms and  quality of life (lifestyle) and a video laryngoscopy (a digital photograph taken) of the throat
16 weeks (four months) of taking the study drug Lansoprazole or placebo (meaning it does not contain any active ingredients) to test the effectiveness of the drug
  • Visit 2 - after the four months participants were be asked to complete further questionnaires about their symptoms and quality of life
  • Visit 3 - the final visit was a follow-up visit after a year (12 months) to complete some final questionnaires
