How the study will be carried out

The trial is taking place in 6 centres across the UK.  These are:

  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Sunderland
  • Nottingham,
  • Glasgow
  • Manchester
  • Brighton.

People taking part in the study will need to come to their local hospital for three study visits.  These may well be part of the usual hospital visits for throat patients, if they routinely attend an ENT clinic in hospital. At the first visit participants will have the opportunity, possibly at their usual clinic appointment, to discuss the study with the study doctors and research nurses at their local hospital and ask any questions they may have.

The study will involve the following:

  • Visit 1 - completing questionnaires about throat symptoms and  quality of life (lifestyle) and a video laryngoscopy (a digital photograph taken) of the throat
  • 16 weeks (4 months) of taking the study drug Lansoprazole or placebo (meaning it does not contain any active ingredients) to test the effectiveness of the drug
  • Visit 2 - after the 4 months people will be asked to complete further questionnaires about their symptoms and quality of life
  • Visit 3 - the final visit is a follow-up visit after a year (12 months) to complete some final questionnaires
